Nurturing a Thriving Farm at The Eco Terreno Vineyard

At our farm, biodiversity is at the heart of everything we do. We don’t just grow grapes — we cultivate a living, breathing landscape where plants and animals thrive together in harmony.

Produce Garden
Since 2018, our Edible Produce Garden has flourished on a one-acre plot at our Lyon Vineyard, bursting with life in every season. We grow a wide variety of organic vegetables, fruits, and herbs, rotating them throughout the year to keep the soil rich and healthy. Depending on the season, you might find cucumbers, sweet peppers, tomatillos, peas, hot peppers, or kale thriving in the beds. When spring arrives, we plant corn, pumpkins, carrots, lettuce, sunflowers, and watermelon — a special treat our chickens absolutely love!

Bee Garden
At Eco Terreno, bees are our champions. We value their vital role in the ecosystem so much that we created a Bee Garden and a bee graces our logo. But what do bees have to do with great winemaking? Everything!
Interestingly, bees don’t pollinate our grapevines — but their impact on the health of the vineyard is undeniable. By pollinating the cover crops that grow between the vines, they help us conserve precious water, improve soil fertility, and support our regenerative farming practices.
Our bees aren’t limited to the Bee Garden, either. We’ve placed beehive boxes throughout the property — four at Lyon Vineyard, four at Cisne Vineyard, and three more in the Edible Garden. Plus, we plant a wide variety of bee-friendly plants across the farm. All these efforts have earned us certification as an official bee-friendly farm!

Animals
We love having animals on our farm — they bring a sense of peace and life to the land. But they do more than just make the farm feel alive. The chickens, running ducks, and geese help care for the vines and orchards all year round, while in winter, the sheep graze the vineyard, naturally enriching the soil. All of this helps create a healthier farm — and in the end, better wines.

Olive Trees

We grow olive trees on our vineyard in Alexander Valley because they naturally thrive in the same Mediterranean climate as our grapevines. Their deep roots help prevent soil erosion, and the trees support biodiversity by providing habitat for beneficial insects and birds. Plus, they allow us to produce our own estate-grown olive oil — another way to share the flavor and character of this special place.

Orchard

We grow citrus like oranges and lemons, along with stone fruits such as peaches and apricots, because they thrive in Sonoma’s climate and bring variety and life to the vineyard. These trees attract pollinators, support biodiversity, and help keep the farm healthy and balanced. And as a bonus, they give us plenty of fresh, delicious fruit to enjoy throughout the seasons.

If you’re lucky, you might find some of this fresh, farm-grown fruit at the local farmers’ markets we attend.
