April 2023 Beehive Wine Club - Welcome Members!
It's time to say “good morning” as our vineyard and wine farm begin to awaken from their long winter's nap. Our crew has been hard at work, tending to our vines, pruning away the old growth of 2022, and making way for a fresh new vintage of grapes. We're excited for new beginnings!
January was wet. There was more rain than in 2022, and double what we received in 2020 and 2021 combined! Our catchment pond and soils are soaking up this extra water for use during the season.
Our sheep are here. During January and February, we welcomed over 300 sheep to the vineyard to graze, mow, and naturally fertilize the soil between vines.
The summer seeds are planted. Our garden team has started seeding and sowing summer crops which include tomatoes, squash, peppers, and corn just to name a few of the bountiful produce we will see later in the year. Much of these are sent to our San Francisco Urban Tasting Room and Supper Club to be featured in wine and food pairings, and decadent dinners. Come visit to taste our new seasonal menu.
We also showcase our produce every Sunday at Sebastopol Farmer’s Market! Come check out our booth for fresh, organic produce and of course, wine!
2016 Leoncito, Red Wine
Our 2016 Leoncito is a dark purple color. The nose is suggestive of warm boysenberry cobbler, dark chocolate, and black plum, with pleasant undertones of cedar. This well-knit and generous wine is followed by flavors of ripe red berries, baking spices, and chocolate covered cherries. The finish is long, smooth, and decadent, beautifully echoing ripe fruit flavors that linger in the mouth.
2016 Los Cuatro, Red Wine
The color is an opaque purple with a bright purple rim. Aromas of blackcurrant, molasses, and blueberry compote are balanced by notes of dried sage and chicory. On the palate, notes of ripe black cherry, dark chocolate, and blackberry come forth. The finish is long, lingering, and pleasantly dry. A complex wine, bold yet balanced.
2019 Luna Llena, Sauvignon Blanc
In the glass, pale colors of greenish-gold. The nose offers aromatic and tropical expressions of banana, green apple, hints of lemongrass, and tarragon. In the mouth green apple, musk melon, and kiwi attack with both flint, moderate acidity, and a smooth, refreshing finish. Light lees contact while aging for 4 months in neutral French oak, improved both the mouth feel and texture.
2019 Desert Rose, Rosé
In the glass the wine is a pale pink color with of fuchsia. The nose is aromatic with beguiling hints of sweet strawberry pie, young pineapple, and red plum notes. This is a dry and pleasantly fruity Rosé with moderately high acidity and plenty of structure to keep it aging gracefully. Flavors of wild strawberries, tart Bing cherries, and crème fraîche linger on a smooth finish.
When Mark first tasted the 2017 Merlot on its own he knew it was a super star in the making. This wine has a very dark purple hue that borders on opaque with an effusively fragrant nose of dark red fruits, cassis, and ripe black cherry. Velvety, full-bodied and satisfying this wine offers mouth-filling flavors of ripe dark fruits, black currant, and baking spices that linger in a long soft finish.
2016 Old Vine, Cabernet Sauvignon
An opaque purple color, with a bright purple rim. The overly fragrant nose invites with cassis, warm baking spices, and espresso. The richness is echoed in the flavors of black cherry, dark chocolate, and spice expressions. The lush fruit-forward style is balanced by an even, silky finish with structure and form designed for aging.
